St. Andrew´s Day

Andrew was named the patron saint when Scotland declared its independence in 1320 with the Declaration of Arbroath. In 2006, the Scottish Parliament officially designated the day as a public holiday. If it falls on a weekend, employees are given the preceding Friday or the following Monday off.

As St Andrew’s Day is not a public holiday under UK law, it is left to employers to decide whether to give their staff the day off, although this is usually the norm in Scotland.
